Freelance Features Writers Wanted: Anime, JRPGs, Gacha & Indie Games

Morganyte is looking for passionate, knowledgeable freelance features writers who have something interesting to say about the games and entertainment they love.

We're an independent gaming and anime publication covering JRPGs, gacha games, indie titles, anime, and the people and studios behind them. We're expanding our roster of contributors and looking for writers who bring unique perspectives, thoughtful analysis, and a genuine understanding of these communities.

We're not just looking for people who can summarize announcements or rewrite press releases. We want writers who can tell compelling stories, explore interesting ideas, and offer perspectives readers won't find everywhere else.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We're interested in contributors who can write engaging, well-researched features across topics such as:

Anime: Character analysis, storytelling, industry trends, adaptations, overlooked series, and thoughtful commentary.

JRPGs: Deep dives into game mechanics, narratives, worldbuilding, characters, franchises, and the evolution of the genre.

Gacha Games: Features exploring games like Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Wuthering Waves, and other titles, including their communities, storytelling, gameplay systems, and design philosophies.

Indie Games: Spotlights on interesting projects, developer interviews, hidden gems, and the creative decisions behind independent games.

Game Development & Industry: Behind-the-scenes perspectives, development challenges, game design, publishing, industry trends, and the business of making games.

Game developers are especially welcome to apply. If you've worked on a game, contributed to a project, or have firsthand industry experience, we'd love to hear your perspective.

You don't need to cover every category. We're more interested in writers who know their subjects deeply and can bring something original to the conversation.

HOW CONTRIBUTING WORKS

We're building a network of freelance contributors who can work with Morganyte on an ongoing basis.

If selected, you'll be invited to pitch your own feature ideas to our editorial team. We'll work together to refine promising pitches, develop story angles, and turn them into published articles.

We're interested in everything from thoughtful opinion pieces and analytical features to developer-focused stories and explorations of gaming culture.

This is a freelance opportunity, with assignments agreed upon individually. We want contributors to have creative freedom while maintaining strong editorial standards.

WHAT MAKES A STRONG CANDIDATE?

We're looking for writers who:

- Have a genuine passion for anime, JRPGs, gacha games, indie games, or game development.
- Can develop original story ideas rather than relying entirely on trending news.
- Write clearly, naturally, and with a distinct voice.
- Understand the communities and subjects they want to cover.
- Can support their arguments with research, examples, and firsthand experience.
- Are comfortable receiving editorial feedback and collaborating on revisions.
- Take accuracy, originality, and responsible sourcing seriously.

Previous published writing experience is a plus, but it's not required. If you have strong ideas and can demonstrate your ability to communicate them, we want to hear from you.

HOW TO APPLY

Please include the following in your Upwork proposal:

1. A short introduction explaining your background and the topics you're most passionate about.

2. Two or three writing samples, preferably published features, essays, reviews, or analytical pieces. Personal blogs and unpublished samples are welcome.

3. Two original feature pitches you'd be interested in writing for Morganyte. Include a working headline and a brief explanation of the angle for each.

4. Any relevant experience, including game development, industry work, community involvement, or specialized knowledge.

We're especially interested in seeing your ideas. A thoughtful, original pitch tells us much more about your potential as a contributor than a generic application.
